Preparation and access
- Do not clean, bleach or paint over the area beforehand
- Keep the area dry and undisturbed until collection
- Provide access to the surface, including moving furniture where possible
Limitations
- A swab describes the sampled spot only, not the room or the building
- Swabs suit hard and semi-porous surfaces; fabrics and dusty materials may need a different method
- Identification does not establish quantity in the air or health risk, and color is not evidence of toxicity
Frequently asked questions
Swab or tape lift?
Swabs suit textured, damp or recessed surfaces. Tape lifts preserve surface structure better on flat, dry surfaces. We choose based on the surface itself.
Does a positive swab mean the whole room is affected?
No. It means the sampled spot contained what the laboratory reported. Extent is a separate question answered by inspection and additional sampling.
Can I swab it myself and send it in?
Self-collected samples often lack location context and controlled handling, which makes results hard to interpret. Collection on site with documentation is more reliable.
